Which dialysis membrane should I use?edp0022001-07-19Click here to register.
I am supposed to dialyze a mixture (consisting of PLL, PEG and sodium tetraborate buffer) against some phosphate buffer saline using a Spectra-Por membrane of mol wt cutoff 12k-14k. The only problem is, I don't know which kind of membrane to purchase. Spectra offers a variety of Spectra/Por 4 tubing membranes with different flat widths, diameters, volume/length, etc. and since I have never had dialysis experience before, I don't know how to decipher from these different products. If anyone can tell me which membrane is the best one to use or let me know where I could find out this information, I would sincerely appreciate it.
Thanks a lot,
Elizabeth

Generally you want to choose a diameter that gives a pleasant shape, this depends upon your sample volume.

Personally, I find it easy to use bags that are about 30 cm (12 inches) long. If I have a 10 ml sample I use the 10 mm flat width membrane. If I have a 100 ml sample I use the 32 mm flat width membrane. (Compare the ml/cm rating to your sample volume to get the expected sack length.)

The only criteria for choosing a flat width is that you wind up with a sack that's easy for you to handle. It's probably not a good idea to try to dialyze a 1 liter sample in the 10 mm flat width tubing, nor is it a good idea to try to dialyze a 0.5 ml sample in the 75 mm flat width tubing.

Thanks for visiting.
